Majestic Bay

Saw a food photo of a flaming crab at another food blog and was curious to find out how special the dish was. Invited my buddies for a meal at this restaurant. Read about the review below.

The Entrance

Herbal Tea $4

Comments: Normal tasting and not that sweet.

Crispy Homemade Tofu with Pork Floss $10

Comments:  The tofu has a nice crisp to it. A pity they used the tasteless tofu but the pork floss enhanced the  taste slightly.

Pork, Sweet and Sour sauce, Guava, Mango Strawberries $27 (M)

Comments: Gives a whole new taste to sweet and sour pork. The pork is slightly fat and chewy. The sweetness from the fruits enhances the taste of the meat.

Singapore Chilli Crab $78.40 $1.40/KG

Comments: One of the better chilli crabs I've eaten in Singapore. The sauce is thick, sweet and spicy. The crab was fresh and the meat was really sweet.

Bread $2.80

Comments: Did not expect their buns to be a french loaf. If I knew, I would not have ordered it, as french loaf with chilli crab sauce is not anything special.

Trio Egg Amaranth leaf $24 (M)

Comments: My favorite vegetable dish as I love century, salted and chicken egg. This dish was no different as it was full of eggs and the amaranth leaf was soft. I found myself finishing the dish because it was really good.

Leopard Garoupa $160 $16/KG

Comments: I've learnt never to order such a fancy fish ever again. I did not realise the $16/kg until I saw the menu again. By the time it was too late. When a fish is steamed with soy sauce, it tastes all the same, therefore if you ever go to this restaurant and want to eat fish, just order a normal and cheap one because at that price for a fish, it's really quite a rip-off.

Hot Plate Tofu with Assorted Seafood $24 (M)

Comments: I like how their tofu was sliced quite thick, the prawn and squid were fresh and the mushrooms were a nice addition to dish as a whole. The sauce was nice and slightly spicy.

Bay's Signature "Kopi" Sauce $78.40 $1.40/KG

Comments: The special dish, saving it for the last. But sadly the dish failed to impress in terms of taste. The flame was something special, definitely not seen at anywhere else in Singapore. Firstly, the crab that came out the first round was not fresh, kudos the manager offered to change it, sadly the 2nd one that came out was also not as fresh as the chilli crab. Anyway the taste of the crab is VERY sweet because of the caramelised sauce around the crab. The flame effect actually dries up the meat too, making the crab difficult to eat. Basically I felt it's just a dish that is nice to see but not nice to eat. Do comment if you have eaten this dish before too and let me know what you think.

Overall review: Overall their food is not bad, except for their fish and crab which were quite expensive. Would recommend the chilli crab rather than their signature crab. The service staff were also good

Arbite

Received a treat from a friend who owed me one. Was introduced to this small restaurant in a shophouse-like place. The place is quite cramp and with it being pack with all the chatter, it's a bustling place. Did not order much food but ordered 2 main dishes which turned out really delicious.

MOA Blanc $12.50

Comments: A sweet but dry beer. It's nice that they provide a cold glass.

Miso Mussels $13.00

Comments: I think this dish has been taken off the menu as I am updating this blog and rightfully so. This dish was kinda tasteless. The mussels were so small that eating it was very difficult.

Truffle Beef Burger with Foie Gras $28.90 (w/o Foie Gras $18.90)

Comments: A really huge and delicious burger. The meat was cooked perfect and the cheddar cheese was melted to add to the sinful combo of the Foie Gras and Beef Patty. The salad and the potato wedges could be easily forgotten once your teeth sinks into the burger.

Squid Ink Spaghettini with Seafood $23.90

Comments: The first thing about this dish is that the seafood is really fresh. The squid rings and prawns were springy and sort of melt in your mouth. The sauce was ok, pasta was tangy and cooked nicely.

Overall review: Even though it's located in a neighborhood area, maybe it's Serangoon Gardens, therefore I find the food kinda expensive. But at least you get the food for the price that you pay. The serving is also quite big. Overall a nice place with great food.

Menya Musashi

A new concept of eating ramen comes this restaurant called Menya Musashi. Named after the legendary samurai, Miyamoto Musashi, who was famed for his double sword style, the award winning Menya Musashi has become a household name in Japan since making its debut in 1996. Credited as the pioneer of a new ramen culture in Japan, they strive to bring new experiences to customers through their revolutionary ramen. Featuring a creamier soup base than most ramen, it comes in white, red and black versions. The signature white tonkotsu broth is made with a substantial amount of pork bones, giving the ramen broth a thick taste full of oomph!

Chopsticks

Agedeshi Tofu (can't remember how much)

Comments: Crispy on the outside, smooth on the inside, sadly not as tasty as how normally a agedeshi tofu would be like.

Bokuto Gyoza Comes together with the Black Kakuni Ramen as a set

Comments: Normal tasting

Black Kakuni Ramen $16.90

Comments: Quite like the noodle but sadly the soup was not hot. Similar to the dish below, only that the broth is really soup instead of something to dip into. The egg slightly overcooked though.

Kodou Tsukemen $15.90

Comments: Another way to eat ramen, something like eating a cha soba. You have to dip the ramen into the soup and slurp it up. It is advisable not to drink the soup though as it is very salty, but eating it like cha soba gives it a different taste altogether. The meat is quite tough though. The egg is the typical half cooked yolk egg.

Overall review: Nice ramen but place a bit crampy and air con did not seem to be working. Staff very efficient and good service standard. They could do better with the egg though.

SHO TEPPAN: D.I.Y Teppanyaki

Last Friday of 2012. Went to have dinner with my girlfriend before we headed for a movie marathon. But this is a food blog, so I'll touch on the food we had. Sitting at B3 of Ion Orchard, this D.I.Y Teppanyaki restaurant. The food is marinated nicely, but let me give you an inside depth of the food as a whole.

Wagyu Beef Steak Set $23.90
Egg (sold separately) $0.80

Comments:  Apologies I forgot to take the Teppanyaki pot.The beef is really tender. As it's a D.I.Y teppanyaki, I chose to cook it medium rare, just the way I like my beef. For the Wagyu Beef Steak, it's different from the rest as u have to cook the vegetables given first then cook the beef with a little bit of oil.

Seafood $9.90

Comments: Ordered this as an ala-carte. Got to admit, their seafood is REALLY GOOD. Very fresh, the prawn was sweet beyond words, The salmon is also good too. The scallops are quite small though. The fish cake and the mussels tasted normal. The downside about ordering this, you got to really cook it well, if not you will get a tummy upset. But you do not want to overcook it as it will lose its taste. Fortunately I have cooking genes so the food tasted well.

Kurobuta with Black Pepper Sauce $17.90

Comments: Kurobuta is known as black pork. It is one of the most tender type of pork in the market now, but it does not come cheap. Anyway the pork is really nice. Chewy with just the right amount of fat in it. Other than black pepper sauce, they also have Teppanyaki, Teriyaki and Miso sauce.

Overall review: The food is really good and at affordable pricing. Meal time it is a must to queue (although the waiting time is about 20 mins), if not, you could try making a reservation. Would go back and try their other food next time and try out their shabu shabu instead of Teppanyaki.
