Gurney Drive

Penang is known as a  food haven in Malaysia, so when this place was introduce to me, I decided to give it a try.

The Entrance @ Terminal 3 (airport)

Ampla Juice (L) $3.80 and Nutmeg Juice (R) $3.50
Both regular size

Comments: The Ampla juice tastes nicer than the Nutmeg. The Nutmeg has a bit of bitter taste, but it's good for health.

Penang Side Dish Platter $13.90

Comments: Enjoyed the cheese tofu, could really taste the cheese inside. The lemon chicken was not bad too, crispy and the lemon sauce was nice. The chicken wing and drumstick was a bit dry. The Lor Bak: A must try Penang dish. Succulent pork, seasoned with a special concoction of spices, rolled and wrapped in crispy-thin, homemade beancurd sheets.

Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle $6.50

Comments: That's extra chilli by the way, just the way my friend likes it. The soup was very tasty, noodles tangy, prawn very fresh. A really nice dish especially for people who like prawn noodles.

Premium Seafood Fried Koay Teow $10.90

Comments: Really love the sweetness in this dish. Fresh prawns used, there were cockles, squid. A bit spicy but the sweetness blends perfectly. Could order the cheaper alternative at $7.50 if you wish to.

King of Chendol $5.90

Comments: After a sumptuous meal, it's always nice to have some local dessert. Chendol is one of my favorite dessert. This one has lots of Gula Melaka. The fillings are as good as other places, too bad not atap chee.

Overall Review: Really enjoyed the food there. It may be considered slightly expensive given that most of those food can be found at cheaper prices at hawker centres. But the food is considered to be tastier than those is hawker centers.

NYDC

Had a primary school gathering recently and it was held at NYDC. NYDC has been around in Singapore for the longest time and this probably my 1st time here and I felt the food was really quite good.

Mushroom Chicken Soup
Comment: Ordinary tasting soup

The Handcrafted Beef Burger

Comments: It looks good and my friend who ate this said it tasted good. Did not get a chance to try it though, you guys can try it for yourselves.

Spaghetti Bolognaise

Comments: 3 people ordered it, 3 people finished it, so I guess it's nice.

3 Amigos About $13

Comments: Apparently this did not taste as nice as it seems and sounds. The pasta was tasteless, and quite soggy.

Mushroom Ham About $13

Comments: This was really good. Topped up with their dynamite chilli for $1 and it's really nice (not recommended for people who can't take spicy). I took rice instead of pasta. The rice tasted like chicken rice though. The mushroom was also nice.

Various types of Ice Cream

Comments: You can't go wrong with ice creams can you. Anyway NYDC is suppose to be famous for their desserts.

Overall Review: The food was quite good. Maybe western do not appeal to the Asian crowd, when we were there, it was not crowded. I would highly recommend this place for gatherings because the decor is just very warm. Although I did not have a chance to try their desserts, it is known to be good, so do go try. Sorry I did not have the prices for some dishes.

Dae Bak Korean BBQ Restaurant

2nd time trying the Korean BBQ type of food. An expensive genre of food but the food is nice and the meat is succulent and delicious.

Chanced upon this shop while looking for food along Amoy street and I was glad it was a nice find. Here's my short review:

Korean BBQ stove with fried omelette egg

Comments: The good thing about Korean BBQ is that the condiments (kimchi, salad, pickles, etc) are free flow, including the egg. Finish just ask them to top up.

Lettuce with Salad Sauce

Pickles

Prime Wagyu Rib $28

Comments: My friends were not really fans of Beef, but I always love a nice steak or piece of wagyu rib, so I ordered it and I was not disappointed. The meat was thickly sliced, and after BBQing it, it tasted really juicy. As you can see the white parts are the fat and that is actually the best part of the meat.

Herb Pork Belly $20

Comments: For people who don't take beef, there's always pork belly. Having a whole slab of pork belly seems intimidating, but they will give you a pair of scissors and you can cut it according to your preference. I recommend bbq-ing the whole slab then cutting it as it keeps the juices in. Just marinating the pork belly with salt seems simple but the meat is really fresh and tender so you can really enjoy the taste of the meat instead of marination.

Spicy Chicken: $18

Comments: If you don't take beef and you scared of pork belly, then I guess the only meat left is chicken. The chicken tasted ok. Even though it was spicy chicken, but it was not that spicy at all. The meat was also really tender.

BBQing the Prime Rib and Pork Belly

Dinner Bean Soup: $21 (Big)

Comments: This soup is tasty I must say. Had a lot of ingredients in it. Mostly seafood. My friend said that the one he tasted in Korea was better, but this was not bad either. It comes like a steamboat, just nice to go with the meat.

Overall review: Really liked the place even though it was a bit small. The pricing of the meats are quite expensive, so it's best to go as a group. I went as a group of 4 and spent about $20+ dollars per person. They have other dishes, but it's weird to go to a Korean-BBQ restaurant without ordering their meat to BBQ. They have free flow of lettuce, so you could wrap the lettuce with the egg(dip in their sauce) and the meat. Taste delicious!
Recommendation: 8/10 (the pricing may set you back a little)

Lenas by MOF

A trip to Lenas is always a headache. Why? Because they a superbly wide variety of food. The menu has so many pages, you'll have a big dilemma on what to choose and being there so many times, I can safely say the food is nice. Which is also why I like to go there for a meal, especially with a big group of friends. Anyway went there for lunch 1 day with 2 friends and this is what we ordered.

 Iced Mint Pompelmo Tea $5

Comments: This tasted something like a mojito. Except for the lack of alcohol. Definitely lot of mint in it. A nice refreshing drink on a hot day. A bit expensive though, would rather drink their hoegarden, which is always on promotion.

Mixed Mushroom Pasta add Egg $13.90 + $1

Comments: A personal favorite. In fact I always like pasta with mushrooms and cream sauce. The egg yolk is only for visual effect actually, because it does not really add any flavor to the pasta. The sauce was slightly salty though, as is with most cream sauce, but the noodles are cooked nicely. A nice dish overall.

White Wine Vongole Hot Pan + Pilaf Rice $12.80 + $2

Comments: Tried a bit of this dish, the rice was fragrant by at $2, I feel it's kinda expensive. The stock was did not have a strong smell of white wine though. The vongole had quite a nice portion and the fire kept the stock hot.

Italian Sausage Pizza $14.50 for 8"

Comments: Their pizzas are the thin type. Sausages slightly over baked but overall it must have been nice because my friend managed to finish it even though she said she was not that hungry.

Overall review: Actually this is only a tiny percentage of the food available in that place. I would recommend getting their membership card if you will frequent the place. A lot of promotions and offers as a member at only $10. The 10% disc should be enough to cover and it can be used at other MOF outlets all over Asia.

Details of the place: You may get more details at their website by clicking -->MOF as they have a few outlets.
Recommendation: 7/10
